A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal tooth replacement option because they look and function like natural teeth.

At So Young Park, DDS, the implant is placed into the jawbone and allowed to fuse with the underlying bone. Once healed, an abutment or connector piece is placed on top of the implant. The abutment holds the crown or artificial tooth in place.

How Do Implants Prevent Bone Deterioration?

Dental implants are tooth replacement options that can prevent bone deterioration. After losing a tooth, the jawbone no longer receives the stimulation it needs to stay healthy and strong. This is because the tooth no longer stimulates the jaw as you eat and chew food. This can lead to bone degeneration over time.

However, dental implants replace the missing tooth above and below the gum line with a root-like post that is surgically inserted into the jawbone. This stimulates the jawbone like a natural tooth and prevents bone deterioration.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Our dentist will place the dental implant screw into your jawbone after numbing your gums and using sedation if needed. The implant site needs to heal for about three to six months, during which time you will come in for follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.

After the implant site has healed, our dentist will attach a custom abutment to the screw. An impression will be made of your mouth and sent to our lab, where your crown will be fabricated from porcelain or another durable material like dental ceramic. When the crown is ready, it will be attached to the abutment, and you will be able to once again chew and speak normally.

The Benefits of Implants

Dental implants provide a strong foundation for tooth replacements. They restore both the visible part of the tooth and the roots underneath. The implants fuse with your jawbone just like the roots of your natural teeth. Once they are attached, they function like natural teeth as well.

With implants, you can eat all the foods you want, speak naturally, and brush and floss like before. Unlike dentures, dental implants don’t move or slip when you talk or eat. Instead, they stay firmly in place so you can feel confident while eating, smiling, and speaking with others. While dental implants are more expensive than traditional bridges and dentures, they are also more effective.

Dental implants are permanent restorations designed to replace missing teeth and the roots that support them. To learn more about the benefits of dental implants, visit So Young Park, DDS at 1660 Westwood Dr Ste G, San Jose, CA 95125, or call (408) 264-1917.
